 1.1809 Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., poet, essayist and father of Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell           Holmes, Jr.

 2.1828 - A patent was issued to Robert Turner for the self-regulating wagon brake.

 3.1882- Australia defeats England in cricket for the first time. The following day a obituary appears in the         Sporting Times addressed to the British team.

 4.1922 - WEAF-AM in New York broadcast the first radio advertisement.

 5.1949 - At the University of Illinois, a nuclear device was used for the first time to treat cancer patients.

 6.1958 Michael Jackson, pop singer, entertainer was born.

 7.1962 - The lower level of the George Washington Bridge opened.

 8.1965 - The Gemini V made a big return to earth by landing in the Atlantic Ocean.

 9.1977 Lou Brock (St Louis Cardinals) breaks Ty Cobb's 49-year-old career stolen bases record at 893.

 10.2004 - India test-launched a nuclear-capable missile able to carry a one-ton warhead. The weapon had         a range of 1,560 miles.
